NEW DELHI: Ace badminton player Saina Nehwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday.nn

nnThe 29-year-old, who hails from Haryana and is settled in Hyderabad, is a former world number one. She has won numerous international titles, including a bronze medal at the Olympics.nn

nn nnShe joined BJP in the presence of party’s National General Secretary Arun Singh. Saina’s elder sister Abu Chandranshu Nehwal also joined BJP. The former world number 1 was inducted into the BJP ahead of the crucial Delhi Assembly elections.nnBorn in Haryana, Nehwal is one of India’s most successful sportsperson. The popular badminton star has been honoured with awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.nnLast week, Nehwal suffered a second consecutive opening round defeat as she went down to Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark to bring curtains on the country’s campaign in the Thailand Masters badminton tournament.nnLast year, a number of sportspersons including cricketer Gautam Gambhir and Babita Phogat had joined BJP.nnSource: Press Trust of India
