A perfect political game is on in the largest electoral state of India. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) knows that the Samajwadi Party (SP) has been able to create some sort of an undercurrent in its favor through consistent campaigning and alliance making. The Congress may be flying high on media channels and social media but its leaders in UP are deserting the party for the SP.

Congress party in Uttar Pradesh has received a booster dose. Priyanka Gandhi has appeared in political screen of the state to assert that she is there to stay and take the grand old party back on path of recovery. And she has help – an unexpected one – from Yogi Adityanath as BJP thinks PGV will dampen SP poll prospects in coming assembly elections.

Now it has become imperative for the BJP to see that the Congress eats up the SP votes. Congress’ vote share in UP is not even a third of SP or Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Hence, Yogi allowed Priyanka Vadra, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders at first to visit Lakhimpur Kheri, allowing them to grab the center-stage and maximum media attention. Priyanka Gandhi is being detained every now and then by the Yogi government and that may fuel her popularity to the extent that Congress begins to eat down the vote of the others.

Also a pre-poll alliance of Congress with either SP or BSP is out of the question. After Congress’ debacle in Bihar polls where its performance became the key for the NDA to retain power and keep the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) out of the treasury benches, SP and BSP are highly unwilling to give a try with the Gandhis. In the given situation, the task of Akhilesh Yadav has doubled as he will have to fight the BJP and the Congress in the same breath.

What is baffling the political pundits in Uttar Pradesh is that Mayawati, who got more votes than the SP in the last Assembly polls, is absent on the ground. Nobody knows what’s the impact from the much-hyped ‘Brahmin Sammelans’ — a move that was once called a prelude to a 2007 type victory. It may be that the ‘BSP Revolution’ that was raised by Late Kanshiram is coming to its end at its last bastion, as held by experts. Many would say that she is on her last leg of politics and is merely protecting the family properties made so far. Hence, it can also be seen that BSP is antagonistic to the Congress but doesn’t speak much against BJP that rules both the state and the Centre.

For now, the Opposition looks hyperactive in Uttar Pradesh as they all know that the road to New Delhi in 2024 will have to pass through Lucknow. The BJP wants to retain the state, SP and BSP would like to make a return and the Congress wants to make a turnaround of their fortune in the state they ruled three decades ago.

Priyanka Gandhi has a point to prove not just to the voters of UP but also within her party, and thus she is making all efforts to secure public sympathy by chronic arrests and incessant detentions as Priyanka recently announced that her party to give 40 percent tickets to women candidates may be a game changer while Rahul Gandhi is out to ensure that he usurps the efforts of his sister Priyanka, whenever she secures media attention so that she does not become natural choice of the Congress party workers and members, for the post of Congress President next year.
