West Asia and India’s immediate neighbourhood will benefit from the improved relations between Washington DC and the Kremlin. American resources and Russian proximity to the region can pave way for speedy solutions

In the present turbulent times when the world is in disarray – Polish border tensions, Ukraine crisis, Afghan crisis, terrorism in West Asia and the Chinese aggression on the east – the nomenclature ‘World Peace’ has gained relevance more than ever in this century. Much of the solution to all of these challenges depends on the two players who have been responsible for the thaw for decades – Russia and America. Hence, when the US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin would be talking to each other coming Tuesday over the Ukrainian matter, the two should not waste the opportunity to normalize their relations as the international community needs their cooperation with each other more than ever.

West Asia and India’s immediate neighbourhood will benefit from the improved relations between Washington DC and the Kremlin. American resources and Russian proximity to the region can pave way for speedy solutions. Terror groups have begun to find safe havens in the interiors of Afghanistan as violence and clashes have risen recently. Entire Af-Pak region is religiously radicalized. A quick and lasting solution is yet to be found there and only Biden and Putin together can fix it whether overtly or covertly.

The normalization of relations between the two biggest rivals and military powers on the earth is necessary for the ‘balance of power’ in the world. India will be the key beneficiary of it as time and again there have voices in the power circles of Washington DC that call for sanctions or tough actions on India for its arms deals with Russia. The S-400 is being delivered and on the other hand India cancelling the US$ 1 billion deal for ‘Make in India’ Kamov helicopter. America, that calls India a natural ally and ‘major defence partner’ should understand the dependence of India on Russia for Defence products and services.

It’s equally important for India to maintain its strategic autonomy, yet being a reliable partner of both Russia and America, in dealing with what looks like the larger threat to world peace – China.

America must repent for making China wealthy through credible actions now. For decades it allowed the Chinese to sit in their lap and earn trillions of dollars which just made the authoritarian communist regime powerful to the extent that it has begun to trample upon democracies, international order and global laws. It's also expected from Putin to timely understand that sooner or later, Chinese belligerence will be directed towards Russia as well and it will be difficult for a weaker economy to avoid it for long.

If there are friendly relations between Russia and the US, three decades after the Cold War ended, will usher a new era of global peace and prosperity. Now both the Superpowers have an opportunity to put diplomacy at test to build ‘stable, predicable’ ties, else, Cold-War 2.0 cometh!
