Kirti Azad is a strong Brahmin face for the North India politics and he had been ignored by the Congress leadership for long. He has a strong base in Jharkhand and Bihar politics. Kirti Azad had joined the TMC in the presence of Mamata Banerjee just days back when she was in Delhi.

NPM: Why did you quit Congress and join Mamata Banerjee’s TMC?

Kirti Azad: If I had continued with the Congress I would have lost my relevance. Since I joined the Congress three years ago, I have been asking the  party to assign me work so that I can work for the people. Regrettably,  I could not get any responsibility from the party despite being elected three times in Lok Sabha and one time in Assembly.

NPM: What is the difference between Congress and TMC?

Azad: We see how Mamata Didi has been working tirelessly for the welfare of people.  Politics is not about sitting inside an air-conditioned room, or tweeting or issuing statements  for news channels, newspapers and social media. You need to remain connected with people just like Mamata Didi is doing on ground and fighting for people's rights. People of Bengal have elected Mamata Didi as CM third time with 49% vote shares despite the BJP and the entire cabinet ministers campaigning against her in the 2021 Assembly Polls and attacking her. Her party received 5% higher than 2016 assembly polls. 'I would rather be a lamb led by a Tiger than be a Tiger led by a lamb'. That is why I joined her party. Not only me, several leaders and former ministers  have left the Congress and joined TMC. It's not difficult to get to the top but to stay at the top when people are pushing from all sides .

NPM: Will TMC project you as the face of Bihar?

Azad: Let's see as talks are going on. I told Mamata Didi that I  will work for the party as she is a mass leader and always seen on ground with people’s issues. Hence, whatever work I am assigned in Bihar or anywhere I will take it with responsibility.

NPM: Are you looking for a Rajya Sabha seat?

Azad: Never demanded anything from Mamata Didi while joining TMC.  For me, joining TMC is equal to getting a Rajya Sabha seat.

NPM: Is TMC supporting any party or contesting  the 2022 Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh?

Azad: You should ask this to the authorized party leaders who can give you more details about the party's plans for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. As per my knowledge, recently  Mamata Didi had said that she will campaign in Uttar Pradesh if needed.

NPM: Who others are joining in Mamata's efforts?

Azad: Recently, she went to Mumbai and met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and  Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray. She couldn't meet  Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray  because he is unwell. The meeting was part of the plan for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

NPM: Will Mamata lead the Opposition battle in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls?

Azad: Yes, she will emerge as an alternative because UPA has lost its presence among opposition parties. She is trying to galvanise them.
